Fabrizio Romano confirms Jarrad Branthwaite is eager for a move to Manchester United.
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Jarrad Branthwaite is eager to move to Manchester United.
With Manchester United likely to sign at least one centre-back this summer, Jarrad Branthwaite is firmly on their radar as a potential replacement for Raphael Varane. The Everton defender impressed during the 2023/24 season but narrowly missed out on a place in Gareth Southgate’s final squad for the European Championship.
This could work in United’s favor, as it means Branthwaite’s transfer would not be delayed by international commitments, allowing the deal to progress swiftly if they return with an offer.
Romano provided an update on this situation during his Transfer Live Show, revealing that Branthwaite is waiting for United to make their move: “The player keeps waiting for Manchester United. He believes that Manchester United is a fantastic option for his future, so he wants to go to Manchester United.”
However, the transfer hinges on whether Everton will lower their £70m asking price. United are unlikely to pursue Branthwaite at that fee, meaning the Toffees will have to revise their terms if a deal is to happen.
Romano further explained: “We will see if Everton will change the conditions of the deal. For £70 million, United are not going for Branthwaite. It has to be something different in terms of the package.”
This saga could extend into the final days of the transfer window, as both clubs navigate Everton’s desire for a high fee and United’s reluctance to overpay. As long as United’s centre-back search remains unresolved, the Branthwaite rumors will persist, with Erik ten Hag reportedly viewing him as his top target for the position. Whether the move materializes remains to be seen.
Branthwaite could prove to be a fantastic signing for United if a deal can be struck, but it seems we are still some way off reaching that point.
