# Yelp Data Pipeline
This directory contains code that I wrote for [this project](https://github.com/davidsmth/SDA_Capstone_Project_2020/blob/master/docs/project_proposal.pdf).
The project itself was inspired by [this Kaggle competition](https://www.kaggle.com/c/yelp-recsys-2013).
The Yelp data pipeline reads raw JSON files containing information about reviews written about businesses in Las Vegas (including metadata about those businesses), transforms them into a more useful format using Spark (I used Spark because I thought it would be fun), loads them into Hive tables that can then be queried using SQL.
To run this pipeline locally:
* Make sure you've installed Apache Spark (with Hive support) locally.
* Start your local Spark cluster using `./sbin/start-all.sh`
* Start your local Hive metastore using `./bin/hive --service metastore`
* Run `yelp_data_pipeline.py` from `data_pipeline/yelp`. You'll need HDFS installed locally as well.
* If you want Spark to write out Parquet files instead of JSON files (which is what I did), then you'll need Parquet support installed in your local Spark installation.
## Data Files
The raw data files used by this pipeline are located at `data/yelp/raw`. You can download them from [here](https://www.yelp.com/dataset_challenge/dataset). Note that this dataset is extremely large (~7GB compressed), so make sure you have enough space on your computer before downloading it.
## Output Files
The output JSON files generated by this pipeline are located at `data/yelp/json`. The output Parquet files are located at `data/yelp/parquet`.
## Hive Tables
The Hive tables generated by this pipeline are located at `hive/yelp_tables`. They're named `reviews`, `businesses`, `users`, `categories`, `cuisine_types`, `cuisines_and_categories`, `cities_and_states`, and `businesses_with_users`.
## Jupyter Notebooks
I wrote two Jupyter notebooks using this data:
* [Exploratory Analysis](https://github.com/davidsmth/SDA_Capstone_Project_2020/blob/master/notebooks/exploratory_analysis.ipynb): This notebook contains some basic exploratory analysis using Pandas.
* [Sentiment Analysis](https://github.com/davidsmth/SDA_Capstone_Project_2020/blob/master/notebooks/sentiment_analysis.ipynb): This notebook contains some basic sentiment analysis using VADER.
