From Stardom to Setbacks: How Ben Simmons Can Revive His NBA Career

Ben Simmons, the former number-one overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers, has faced significant challenges over the past few years. Drafted in 2016 with high expectations after an impressive college career at LSU, Simmons had a promising start with the 76ers before his career took a sharp decline. Here’s a look at how Simmons can turn things around and reclaim his place in the NBA.

A Promising Rookie Season

After missing his first season due to injury, Simmons made a strong debut in 2017-18, earning Rookie of the Year honors. He impressed with averages of 15.8 points, 8.2 assists, and 8.1 rebounds per game. His versatility on the court led to comparisons with greats like Magic Johnson and LeBron James. In the playoffs, he continued to shine, putting up 18.2 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 9.0 assists in a series win over the Miami Heat.

Although the 76ers fell to the Celtics in the next round, there was still optimism surrounding Simmons’ future in Philadelphia.

Loss of Confidence and Struggles

Simmons continued to perform well in the following seasons, earning three consecutive NBA All-Star selections and finishing second in Defensive Player of the Year voting in 2020-21. However, knee and back injuries began to take their toll, and his struggles became most apparent during the 2021 playoffs.

Despite strong performances in the first round against the Washington Wizards, Simmons’ free-throw shooting woes became a major issue. He shot just 35.7% from the line in that series, and things got worse in the next round against the Atlanta Hawks, where he shot only 33.3%. His confidence hit rock bottom, and in Game 7, with a chance to tie the game, Simmons passed up an open layup, leading to a Sixers loss and his request for a trade.

A blockbuster deal sent Simmons to the Brooklyn Nets, but injuries and underperformance have kept him from returning to his early-career form.

The Road to Redemption

As the 2024-25 NBA season approaches, the Brooklyn Nets are entering a rebuilding phase, providing Simmons with a low-pressure opportunity to bounce back. For Simmons to complete his redemption arc, several factors need to fall into place.

While injuries are beyond his control, Simmons must prioritize his health and body maintenance. On the court, however, there are key areas he can address. His shooting, particularly free-throw shooting, has been a glaring weakness. Over the past two seasons with the Nets, Simmons has shot below 50% from the line. Improving his free throws will not only help his team but also boost his confidence and rhythm.

Simmons excels in controlling the tempo of the game and facilitating fast breaks, but defenses no longer view him as a scoring threat. Last season, he averaged just 4.9 shot attempts per game in 15 appearances with Brooklyn. By becoming more aggressive and attacking the rim, Simmons can create more opportunities for his teammates and keep the defense on its toes.

Signs of Optimism in Brooklyn

Despite his struggles, Simmons has shown flashes of his old self with the Nets. In one game against the Memphis Grizzlies in 2022, he posted 22 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists. He’s also had multiple games where he scored in double digits on 100% shooting. His unselfish playing style—always looking for the best shot—remains a key part of his game.

With the Nets not expected to be title contenders this season, Simmons has the perfect environment to work on his game and regain his confidence. Brooklyn is in need of a leader, and with Simmons fully cleared to play, there’s hope that he will embrace this role and guide the team’s young core. As a veteran on the squad, Simmons has the chance to reestablish himself as a key player and prove that his best years are not behind him.
