Panthers, Chargers May Finally Sign 1,000-Yard Free Agent 1

Panthers and Chargers Could Finally Sign 1,000-Yard Free Agent Hunter Renfrow

The Carolina Panthers or Los Angeles Chargers might soon add free agent wide receiver Hunter Renfrow to their roster, looking to strengthen their receiving corps. Renfrow, a former Pro Bowl wideout, remains unsigned after the first week of the regular season, but teams are showing interest in bringing him onboard. While multiple reports suggest he’s still on the market, Renfrow may no longer be the high-impact player he once was, likely taking on a reserve role. Just three years ago, Renfrow recorded an impressive 103 receptions for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns under quarterback Derek Carr.

Renfrow’s performance earned him a contract extension with the Raiders, but after just one season, Las Vegas is moving on, favoring Jakobi Meyers as a replacement. In 2022, Renfrow managed only 25 catches for 255 yards. Now, since teams don’t need to offer guaranteed deals to veterans after Week 1, Renfrow could be signed as emergency depth. The former Clemson star has proven to be a reliable slot receiver, and a change of scenery might rejuvenate his career.

Why the Panthers Need Renfrow

The Panthers are in dire need of offensive firepower after a lackluster performance against the Saints. Renfrow could slot in alongside veteran Adam Thielen, sharing reps in a receiving unit that’s adjusting to a young quarterback, Bryce Young. Diontae Johnson’s contract ends after this season, making Renfrow a potential long-term fit if he clicks with the offense.

Why the Chargers Could Be a Fit

With DJ Chark on injured reserve for a few weeks, the Chargers are also in need of receiver depth. Renfrow could step in and provide immediate support, especially with their receiving corps missing key players.

Other Possible Destinations

New Orleans Saints

Despite a solid offensive showing against Carolina, the Saints could benefit from adding Renfrow, particularly to reunite him with Derek Carr. The chemistry between Carr and Renfrow from their days in Las Vegas could add a much-needed spark to the Saints’ offense, especially if young players like A.T. Perry take time to develop. Given the Saints’ struggling offensive line, Renfrow’s quick ability to get open could provide a safety valve for Carr.

Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens may consider Renfrow if Nelson Agholor doesn’t step up behind Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman. Agholor hasn’t been as impactful as hoped, and Renfrow could provide a stable veteran presence in the wideout rotation. While Renfrow may not transform the offense, he could be a valuable asset in a championship-contending team like Baltimore.

Dallas Cowboys

CeeDee Lamb’s extension solidifies his future in Dallas, but with an aging Brandin Cooks and a relatively inexperienced Jalen Tolbert, Renfrow could add some much-needed reliability in the slot. With tight end Jake Ferguson dealing with injuries, Renfrow could give Dak Prescott another dependable option, especially under pressure.

Renfrow may not be the standout player he was a few years ago, but his experience and slot receiver skills make him a valuable asset for teams in need of depth or veteran leadership.
