Article:
Paragraph 0: ...
Paragraph 1: During our recent visit we got talking about her story.
Paragraph 2: She had just celebrated her twenty fifth wedding anniversary.
We were surprised.
I asked her how she’d managed it.
“Easy,” she replied.
We were intrigued.
She explained that she’d known her husband since school days.
She’d fallen in love with him at first sight.
But he hadn’t returned her affections at that time.
He was too shy.
Years later when they were both adults he realised that he’d been mistaken about his feelings.
She was still keen so he proposed.
She accepted happily.
It had worked out well.
I asked how they managed those early years when they were living together but had not yet married.
“We were lucky,” she said.
“We had different bedrooms.”
I asked what difference that made.
“It made it easier,” she replied.
“After all we didn’t have anything against each other.”
She was referring to temptation or frustration or whatever you want to call it.
We discussed how many couples fail because they succumb too easily before marriage or even before they’ve been living together long enough to know each other well enough.
“With us,” she explained “we’d both gone through our adolescent sexual awakenings long before we got together.”
Paragraph 3: ...
Paragraph 4: The point being that there are many ways we can make it easier for ourselves or others not to succumb too easily when temptation beckons us on or when we’re feeling lonely or frustrated or whatever it may be that’s getting us down.
This woman’s story shows us how important it is not only not to make it too easy for ourselves but also not too hard either.
Analyzing how to complete the missing part...
The existing paragraphs focus on a personal anecdote shared during a visit about two individuals who have been married for twenty-five years. The narrative highlights how they successfully navigated potential pitfalls commonly faced by couples such as temptation before marriage by having separate bedrooms during their early cohabitation years. They attribute part of their successful relationship management to prior experiences with adolescent sexual awakenings before living together.
The missing Paragraphs (0 and 3) should serve specific purposes within the article:
Paragraph 0 should introduce the context—perhaps an event or setting where conversations about relationships occur naturally—and establish why these discussions are pertinent or interesting. It could mention themes such as relationship longevity or challenges couples face.
Paragraph 3 should build upon the previous narrative by exploring broader implications or lessons derived from this woman's experience. It might delve into strategies other couples might consider based on what was shared by this couple or reflect on societal attitudes towards premarital cohabitation.
Based on this analysis, here are possible completions for Paragraphs 0 and 3:
Paragraph 0:
At our monthly community gathering where residents share stories over cups of tea and homemade scones, tales of love and life are as abundant as the pastries on display. These stories range from whirlwind romances that defy all odds to long-standing partnerships that stand as testaments to commitment through thick and thin. It was during one such gathering that I found myself captivated by one particular story—a narrative not only of enduring love but also of deliberate choices made along the way.
Paragraph
Here is a paragraph:
"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."
- Arthur C Clarke
The rapid development of new technologies has always been both fascinating as well as challenging for business leaders – from electricity through telephony (and telegraphy), radio (and television), computers (and mainframes), cell phones (and PDAs), MP3 players (and CDs), iPods (and DVDs), tablets (and laptops), smartphones (and flip phones) … ad infinitum!
Each successive wave has brought both excitement about new opportunities – as well as fear about disruption – especially since no one can predict exactly what will happen next! In fact there have been many predictions about technology that turned out completely wrong! For example:
- In November of last year I wrote an article entitled “Is Google Glass Evil?”. In it I noted that although Google Glass was touted as “the next big thing” some people thought it was “creepy” – especially since there was concern about privacy issues around taking surreptitious photos or videos without others knowing about it! Well – today Google announced that it was discontinuing Google Glass! Apparently its sales weren’t good enough – despite being one of Google’s most popular products!
- In September I wrote an article entitled “The Rise And Fall Of The Tablet?” In it I noted that tablet sales were dropping precipitously despite all the hoopla around Apple’s new iPad Pro tablet computer! Some analysts suggested that tablet sales were dropping because consumers preferred larger smartphones (“phablets”) instead! Others suggested that consumers preferred laptops instead! Well – according to Gartner today tablet sales dropped another -13% in Q4-2015 – despite all efforts by manufacturers like Apple!
- In May I wrote an article entitled “Are Wearable Devices Just A Passing Fad?” In it I noted that wearable devices like Fitbit fitness trackers had become increasingly popular over recent years! But – at least according to some analysts – there was concern whether wearable devices would actually catch on among mainstream consumers! Well – according IDC today wearable device shipments rose +15% globally during Q4-2015! But – at least according to some analysts – wearables like smart watches haven’t caught on quite as fast as fitness trackers like Fitbit!
So what do these examples tell us? That no matter how much effort we put into analyzing trends – we still can’t predict exactly what will happen next!
Of course business leaders can’t ignore technological trends just because they can’t predict exactly what will happen next! But business leaders do need take into account two important factors:
- Technological change occurs exponentially – so you need keep your eyes wide open so you don’t get blindsided by disruptive technologies!
- Technological change occurs exponentially so you need keep your eyes wide open so you don’t miss out on new opportunities created by these same disruptive technologies!
In fact there’s actually another factor you need consider when analyzing technological trends:
- Technological change occurs exponentially so you need keep your eyes wide open so you don’t get caught up in hype surrounding technologies that never pan out!
In fact today there’s lots of hype around so-called “Internet Of Things” (IoT) devices like smart thermostats (“Nest”), smart lighting (“Philips Hue”), smart door locks (“August”), smart cameras (“Ring”), smart refrigerators (“Samsung Family Hub”), smart vacuums (“Roomba”) … etc etc etc!
Of course lots of these devices are cool gadgets – but will they catch on among mainstream consumers? Will businesses find ways of leveraging these IoT devices?
Well – if you want real-world examples just take a look at what Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ: AMZN) has done with its Echo/Alexa voice-enabled device!
Amazon recently announced that Echo/Alexa voice-enabled device sales had skyrocketed during the recent holiday season – with more than tripled sales compared with last year! As Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos noted:
"We've seen explosive growth in Echo since launching last year…"
So what does this mean? That voice-enabled devices are really catching on among mainstream consumers?
Well … yes & no …
For starters let’s look at what’s really happening behind-the-scenes …
Amazon recently released its annual “State Of Amazon Music” report which noted:
"Voice commands grew from less than one percent of total music consumption hours on Amazon Music last year up to seven percent during Q4."
So why did voice-enabled devices catch-on among mainstream consumers? Because Amazon figured out how make using these devices easy!
In fact Amazon even designed Alexa so people could ask questions like “Alexa what should I listen-to?” And then Alexa would reply back with suggestions based upon each individual user’s preferences!
But … remember … even though voice-enabled devices are catching-on among mainstream consumers doesn’t mean all IoT devices will do so as well!
Of course IoT devices offer lots of great opportunities for businesses … especially since IoT devices typically rely upon cloud computing platforms like Amazon Web Services Inc (NASDAQ: AMZN) which means businesses can leverage IoT data through analytics tools like Amazon Redshift Data Warehouse which can integrate data from multiple sources using AWS Glue ETL Service which enables data scientists & analysts use machine learning algorithms via AWS Machine Learning Service which enables businesses create custom applications via AWS Lambda Function-as-a-Service platform … etc etc etc!
So what does all this mean? That if you’re serious about leveraging IoT technologies then you need think beyond individual IoT devices & consider how you can leverage data generated by these same devices!
Of course lots of other companies besides Amazon offer cloud computing platforms & analytics tools including IBM Corp (NYSE: IBM), Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ: MSFT), Google Inc (NASDAQ: GOOG) … etc etc etc!
And lots of other companies besides Amazon offer IoT devices including Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ: CSCO), Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (OTCMKTS: SSNLF), LG Electronics Inc (OTCMKTS: LGEAF) … etc etc etc!
But if you’re serious about leveraging IoT technologies then you also need think beyond just cloud computing platforms & analytics tools & consider how you can leverage data generated by these same devices!
For example:
- How can businesses use IoT data generated by wearable devices like Fitbit fitness trackers?
- How can businesses use IoT data generated by connected vehicles?
- How can businesses use IoT data generated by connected home appliances?
Of course lots of companies besides Fitbit offer wearable devices including Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL), Garmin Ltd (OTCMKTS: GRMN), Xiaomi Corp … etc etc etc!
And lots of companies besides connected vehicles offer connected vehicles including BMW AG (OTCMKTS: BAMXF) Mercedes-Benz AG (OTCMKTS: DDAIF), Toyota Motor Corp … etc etc etc!
And lots of companies besides connected home appliances offer connected home appliances including Whirlpool Corp (NYSE: WHR), GE Appliances … etc etc etc!
But if you’re serious about leveraging IoT technologies then you also need think beyond just cloud computing platforms & analytics tools & consider how you can leverage data generated by these same devices!
### Exercise:
1. Identify all instances where specific technologies or products are mentioned along with their corresponding companies or creators. Then replace each mention with an invented alternative name while maintaining clarity regarding what type of technology/product it represents.
2. For every prediction mentioned within the paragraph about technological trends or product success/failure—whether correct or incorrect—rewrite those sentences using future conditional tense ("would", "could", "might") while retaining their original meaning.
3. Locate any statistics provided regarding technological adoption rates or market performance figures. Replace these exact numbers with hypothetical percentages that reflect either twice the growth rate mentioned or half the decline rate mentioned.
4. Find three places where rhetorical questions are used within the paragraph. Transform these rhetorical questions into assertive statements without changing their underlying implications.
5. Throughout the paragraph where concerns about technology adoption among mainstream consumers are expressed ("Wouldn't work", "Wouldn't catch-on"), rewrite these concerns as optimistic projections using past perfect tense.
6. Identify any mentions of specific analytical tools or services provided by companies like Amazon Web Services Inc., IBM Corp., Microsoft Corp., Google Inc., Cisco Systems Inc., Samsung Electronics Co., LG Electronics Inc., Fitbit Ltd., Garmin Ltd., Xiaomi Corp., BMW AG., Mercedes-Benz AG., Toyota Motor Corp., Whirlpool Corp., GE Appliances; replace them with fictional names but ensure each replacement clearly indicates its function within its respective industry context.
7. Anywhere within the paragraph where potential uses for IoT data are suggested ("How can businesses use IoT data..."), elaborate further by adding two additional hypothetical applications per example given.
### Solution:
1. Original mentions include "Google Glass," "Apple’s new iPad Pro," "tablet sales," "Fitbit fitness trackers," "smartphones ('phablets')," "laptops," "smart watches," "Echo/Alexa voice-enabled device," "Nest," "Philips Hue," "August," "Ring," "Samsung Family Hub," "Roomba," "Amazon Echo/Alexa," "Amazon Music," "AWS Glue ETL Service," "AWS Machine Learning Service," "AWS Lambda Function-as-a-Service platform," "Amazon Web Services Inc."(NASDAQ: AMZN)," "IBM Corp."(NYSE: IBM)," "Microsoft Corp."(NASDAQ: MSFT)," "Google Inc."(NASDAQ: GOOG)," "Cisco Systems Inc."(NASDAQ: CSCO)," "Samsung Electronics Co Ltd."(OTCMKTS: SSNLF)," "LG Electronics Inc."(OTCMKTS:LGEAF)," "Fitbit," "Garmin Ltd."(OTCMKTS: GRMN)," "Xiaomi Corp.", "BMW AG."(OTCMKTS:BAMXF)," Mercedes-Benz AG."(OTCM
